Ci son voluti vent'anni per mettere insieme questa serie. Fornisce a quanti sono interessati alla mia musica una raccolta esaustiva di materiale live precedentemente mai pubblicato (ASSOLUTAMENTE NIENTE SOVRAINCISIONI), registrati con qualsiasi dispositivo disponibile (dal 7½ ips analogico a due tracce arrivando al 24 tracce digitale), partendo con i nastri più antichi (ottobre 1968, Royal Festival Hall, London, England), fino ad arrivare al più recente (con materiale dal nostro tour mondiale del 1988 "BROADWAY THE HARD WAY").
Grande cura è stata posta a tutta l'opera al fine di assicurare la migliore qualità audio, tuttavia sono state inserite anche selezioni dei primi tempi aventi interesse storico ed eseguite dalle originali Mothers Of Inventino e, sebbene non esattamente “hi-fi”, sono state incluse per il piacere di quei feticisti che ancora credono che il solo “buon” marteriale sia quello suonato da quel particolare gruppo. Ci auguriamo che il confronto con le registrazioni dei gruppi più recenti metterà fine a questo peculiare equivoco.
QUESTA RACCOLTA NON È CRONOLOGICA
La performance di qualsiasi formazione in qualsiasi anno può essere (e spesso è) “editata” dalla performance di qualsiasi altra formazione di qualsiasi altro anno, a volte a metà del brano.
Le selezioni sono state scelte come risposte a queste domande teoriche:
[1] È questa la miglior versione disponibile di QUESTO BRANO eseguito da QUESTA FORMAZIONE?[2] C'è qualche significato “folklorico” dell'esecuzione?
[3] È la prima registrazione?
[4] È l'esibizione “unica” di un evento improvvisato?
[5] Al suo interno c'è un buon assolo?
[6] Fornirà "Conceptual Continuity Clues" ai maniaci più sfegatati possessori di una completa collezione di registrazioni?
[7] L'inclusione di questo brano aiuterà il flusso stilistico della sequenza (dei brani) dell'album fornendo tensione (contrasto) o sollievo.
[8] C'è un film o una registrazione video dell'esibizione?
Spero questo volume sia di vostro gradimento e che troviate il tempo per ascoltare l'intera raccolta di 13 ore.
"YOU CAN'T DO THAT ON STAGE ANYMORE" è dedicato ai musicisti che vi hanno suonato e agli ascoltatori che li hanno apprezzati nei due passati decenni.
THE HELSINKI CONCERT - Kulttuuritalo, Helsinki, Finland

Questo concerto (c'è nessuno che si ricorda il luogo esatto o il nome del tecnico di registrazione?) fu divertente, a dispetto del fatto che Napoleon Murphy Brock avesse la polmonite e che Coy Featherstone, il nostro direttore delle luci, fosse stata picchiato in faccia da una guardia all'Hotel Hesperia la notte precedente. .
Il repertorio è fondamentalmente lo stesso dell’album Roxy, comunque i tempi ultraveloci dei motivi più ardui dimostra ciò che accade quando un gruppo ha suonato il materiale per un anno, ed è così a proprio agio con esso da poterlo probabilmente eseguire ad occhi chiusi.
Questa band ha un sacco di capacità (e un equipaggiamento da tour miserabile, sempre rotto e in preda a borbottii e ronzii). E nonostante ciò è rimasta una delle formazioni predilette dal pubblico, e così, per quelli di voi che sono incontentabili, presentiamo un intero concerto con dentro un po’ di tutto, compresa roba che non si potrebbe più fare sul palco.

This series took 20 years to put together. It provides for those interested in my music a comprehensive collection of previously unreleased live material (ABSOLUTELY NO OVER DUBS), recorded in every available medium (7½ ips analog two-track up through 24 track digital), beginning with the earliest tapes (October, 1968, Royal Festival Hall, London, England), to the most recent (fea¬turing material from our 1988 "BROADWAY THE HARD WAY" world tour).
Great care has been taken throughout to ensure the best audio quality, how¬ever early selections of historical interest performed by the original Mothers Of Invention, though not exactly "hi-fi:' have been included for the amusement of those fetishists who still believe the only "good" material was performed by that particular group. Hopefully, comparisons to recordings by the later ensem¬bles will put an end to that peculiar misconception.
THIS COLLECTION IS NOT CHRONOLOGICAL.
The performance of any band from any year can be (and often is) edited to the performance of any other band from any other year, sometimes in the middle of a song.
The selections were chosen as answers to these theoretical questions:
(1) Is this the best available version of THIS SONG by THIS BAND?
(2) Is there some "folkloric" significance to the performance?
(3) Is it a premiere recording?
(4) Is it a "one-time-only" performance of an improvised event?
(5) Is there a good solo in it?
(6) Will it give "Conceptual Continuity Clues" to the hard-core maniacs with a complete record collection?
(7) Does the inclusion of this song help the stylistic flow of the album sequence by providing contrast or relief?
(8) Is there film or video tape of the performance?
I hope you enjoy this volume and will find time to hear the entire 13 hour collection.
"YOU CAN'T DO THAT ON STAGE ANYMORE" is dedicated to the musicians who play on it and to the listeners who have appreciated them for the last two decades.

THE HELSINKI CONCERT - 22/09/1974
This concert (does anybody remember the actual place or name of the record¬ing engineer?) was fun, in spite of the fact that Napoleon Murphy Brock had pneumonia, and that Coy Featherstone, our lighting director, had been maced in the face by a guard at the Hotel Hesperia the night before.
The repertoire is basically the same as the Roxy album, however, the ultra¬fast tempos on the more difficult tunes demonstrate what happens when a band has played the material for a year, and is so comfortable with it they could prob¬ably perform it blindfolded.
This band had a lot of skill (and miserable touring equipment-it was always breaking down, and full of hums and buzzes). In spite of this, it has remained one of the audience's favorite ensembles, and so, for those of you who crave what they used to do, we present a full concert with a little bit of everything ¬including stuff that you can't do on stage anymore.
